Why you need it
During Company setup you upload proof of your EIN. The IRS matches every payroll filing to the exact legal business name tied to your EIN, so the letter confirms your name and EIN match and your filings are accepted the first time. Either the original CP 575 or a 147C works. See PR-04.
Option 1: Download it from your IRS Business Tax Account
If your business is eligible for an IRS Business Tax Account, sign in and look under Tax Records for a digital CP 575. The IRS says the digital notice can be used in place of the original CP 575 and the 147C letter. Start at irs.gov/businesses/business-tax-account.
Option 2: Call the IRS for a 147C letter
- Call 800-829-4933, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time (Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific time).
- Have your business's legal name, address, and EIN (if you know it) ready.
- The IRS verifies your identity first and only gives EIN details to someone authorized for the business, such as an owner or officer, or an authorized representative.
- Ask for Letter 147C, EIN Previously Assigned, and ask how they can send it to you.
Just need the number, not the letter?
The IRS suggests checking these first:
- the original notice the IRS sent when you applied for your EIN
- the bank that holds your business account
- state or local agencies where you applied for a license
- past business tax returns
If you still can't find it, the same phone line can give you the number once they've verified you're authorized. Details: irs.gov EIN page.
